Audience with Keir for politics students

Posted: 28th July 2022

Sixth form students got a taste of life in politics when they attended talks by leading political figures.

Year 12 students spent three days at the New Statesman political magazine as part of their politics, history and English literature studies.

Matas, Tia and Poppy attended the New Statesman Politics Live where they heard talks from Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, health secretary at the time Sajid Javid and defence secretary at the time Ben Wallace.

They also watched Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons, lead by deputy prime minister at the time Dominic Raab, before lunch with political commentator Andrew Marr and a meeting with editor Jason Cowley.

Mata said: “It was great to hear real life, senior politicians speak. You get to feel their passion.”

Tia said: “It was great to see the theatre of Prime Minister’s Questions.”

Poppy said: “The editor gave us all great advice on how our interests in politics can lead to a career in journalism. He advised us and recommended that when we go to university, we all get involved with the university paper and get used to writing articles.”

Matthew Yerosimou, head of Year 12 and history and politics teacher, said: “Being exposed to the real decision makers of the UK allowed the students to experience how a politician addresses a room full of people in real life.

“This work experience is something we are incredibly proud of being a part of here at Sir Frederick Gibberd. Our partnership with the New Statesman is invaluable to our students, especially those interested in politics and journalism.

“As our first set of students lucky enough to attend this great magazine, our sixth formers are incredibly grateful for the opportunity.”

The students also got to see how the magazine is put together and distributed.
